This paper focuses on the role of emotions in populism. Drawing on a multidisciplinary perspective that links contemporary studies on populism with the recent scholarship on social movements and the "affective turn" in social sciences, this piece of research stresses concrete emotional manifestations as essential factors that the scholarship has to take into account in order to shed light on the populist phenomenon. This perspective opens up interesting horizons for the debate on the normative value of populism and its relationship with liberal democracy. It is argued that depending on the specific configuration of emotional vectors, this nexus might tend towards a positive equilibrium, one in which populist discourses and practices can be a corrective to democratic weaknesses, or on the contrary, towards a negative relationship, and therefore populism can dismantle democratic equilibrium and, ultimately, lead to authoritarian forms of politics. ; Esta investigación pregunta qué rol desempeña la dimensión emocional en el populismo. Adoptando una perspectiva multidisciplinar que une a los estudios contemporáneos sobre populismo con la literatura sobre movimientos sociales y el "giro afectivo", este trabajo avanza la hipótesis de que para arrojar luz sobre este fenómeno hay que tomarse en serio las concretas manifestaciones emocionales propias de la vida política. Esta perspectiva abre horizontes interesantes para el debate sobre el valor normativo del populismo y su relación con la democracia liberal. Dependiendo de la declinación de los vectores emocionales, este nexo se inclina hacia un equilibrio positivo, donde discursos y prácticas populistas pueden corregir o fortalecer la democracia, o, por el contrario, hacia una relación negativa, y el populismo puede alterar los equilibrios democráticos y, en última instancia, desembocar en formas autoritarias.

However, while sociologists have emphasised primarily the role of emotions in the mobilization process, and normative political theorists have discussed mainly on the dichotomy between suitable versus harmful emotions for democratic purposes, there is still a lacuna in the understanding of the political role of emotions. It is this gap that this thesis attempts to fill. Focusing on the broad role of emotions apparent in recent anti-austerity movements in Europe, this thesis advances a theoretical inquiry, which can contribute to the connection between protest analysis, democratic theory, and populism. While in the broad scientific literature recent protest mobilizations have generally been associated with contentious processes, the rise of left-wing populism, practices of deliberative democracy, experiments in horizontal decision-making, and so forth, this research highlights the role of affects in recent anti-austerity movements, and examines how a discursive focus on emotions can enrich the scholarship on democratic theory on offer. The main argument proposed here is that, besides their central function in motivating people to engage in political action, emotions also play a significant role in the framing of democratic order. Specifically, it is contended that they have a 'geometrical' role in shaping the political subject – namely 'the people'. As well, contributing to the latency of political concepts, they have an 'evocative' role in today's struggle for democratic legitimacy and popular sovereignty. Finally, this investigation assesses the success of some current theories of democracy giving an account of the role of emotions in politics, and argues that an agonistic approach offers fruitful insights in this debate.

The emergence of protest movements, such as theIndignadosandOccupy Wall Street, is one of the most remarkable political occurrences in recent years. Social scientists have immediately started analysing these phenomena, highlighting the broad political implications for contemporary democracies, and especially the disaffection towards political institutions and the financial system they reflect. This article argues that these phenomena should be considered through the lens of the broad role of emotions in politics. Whilst scholars have recently shown increased attention to the role of emotions in politics, this article advances some suggestions for a theoretical and crossdisciplinary inquiry, which can contribute to the connection between protest event analysis and normative political theory. Quoting particularly theIndignados' slogans and mottos, this article draws attention to the central function of emotions – especially anger and fear – in motivating people to engage in political action and in the construction of political order. Specifically, this article shows how emotions play in the construction of the political subject –the people– as well as in today's struggle for democratic legitimacy and the resistance to the emptying of democracy by globalmarket forces.

Two contemporary phenomena in the field of immigration force us to reflect upon the relationship between the migration flows and their political management: the tortuous development of the European immigration policies, and the contemporary struggles between member states in the administration and regulation of the last flows of immigrants coming from the 2011 "Arab Spring" countries. This paper attempts to answer two interrelated questions: What do these phenomena teach us about the features of the political and territorial space called Europe? Is it possible to read the current struggles on immigration as the essential political nature of Europe? Particular attention is paid to the agreement on migration among member states and European institutions and, at the same time, to the dimensions and dialectics of borders, with some examples from the Italian and Spanish cases. In this light, this paper aims to show how a wide theoretical and historical approach can be useful to understand the contradictory character of immigration policy and the multidimensional features of the EU borders. Las actuales repatriaciones de gitanos que el gobierno de Sarkozy ha puesto en marcha nos obliga a reflexionar una vez más sobre la relación entre el fenómeno de las migraciones y su gestión política. En este pequeño ensayo se abordan los temas teóricos que las políticas de inmigración conllevan, con particular atención a la gestión política de los espacios humanos. De hecho es a través del análisis de la libertad «espacial» que se pueden entrever elementos biopolíticos en las políticas de inmigración de los Estados y de la Unión Europea. ; Contemporaneous Roma repatriation that Sarkozy's government has started up, once again force us to reflect on the relation between the migration phenomenon and its political management. This short paper deals with the theoretical matters that the immigration policies entail, with special attention on the political management of the human spaces. In fact it is through the analyses of the «space freedom» that it can be glimpsed biopolitic elements in the migration policies of the European States and of the European Union itself.

There is a consensus that right, and left-wing populism is on the rise on both sides of the Atlantic, from Donald Trump in the United States, to Spain's leftist Podemos. These may utilize different kinds of populist mobilizations but the fact remains that elite and mass opinion is fuelling a populist backlash. In Populism and Passions, twelve scholars engage with discourse analysis, democratic theory, and post structural political thought to study the political logic of passion for contemporary populism. Together these interdisciplinary essays demonstrate what emotional engagement implies for the spheres of politics and the social, and how it governs and mobilizes individuals. The volume presents: Theoretical and empirical implications for political analysis; Chapters on the current rise of populism, both right and left-wing trends, their different ideological features, and their relationship with the logic of passion; Theoretical implications for the future study of populism and democratic legitimacy.
